It is what we do! Believe in the illusion that the youth creates for us of the eternal future. We strongly assume that we have a great deal of time at our disposal but how true is that? Time is like that cunning fake friend who pretends to love you but their true colors are revealed a little later when they stick a knife through your back. It's like a slap on the face to realize how dumb you've been to not see the red flags.
I'm not trying to villainize time however it is sly and inconsiderate of our feelings, it keeps ticking and before we can realise, it'll stab us not from the back but directly in the bosom. It's not time's fault that we deliberately shifted our focus away from it and became delusional! Time betraying us is just one side of the story, us staying in denial is the other side.
How often in a day do we postpone things? or how often do we throw a goal down the bin just so we could continue being idle. Mom says organize your closet, we say later. Body says drink water, we say later unless the bottle is within the reach of our hands. A voice in the head says do your workout, we find a way to deceive that pricking voice so that we can successfully subdue it.
What we miss is mental resilience. The mental strength to do challenging tasks, to say no to ourselves. It is as important to say no to ourselves as it is to others. We easily believe the ego's tales, there is little to no resistance to it. We identify with the ego, that's the problem. Why is it so hard to accept a truth and usually easier to believe a lie? A question to think about.
Dopamine hits are fine but only if it's enjoyed at an appropriate amount. But all that we seek is to feel high on dopamine. We overdo pleasure-giving activities like scrolling through reels and compensating our void by eating food like it's love! We don't think for the long-term and chase short-term pleasures which eventually ends up wrecking our lives.
So all I am saying is my dear readers, Time is too sincere and dedicated to its duty to keep ticking. The illusion of the eternal future will be gone when one day we wake up in the morning to fit in our artificial teeth sets. Im sure the image that I just formed of the old age feels really far away in some distant future but just like how we thought us becoming adults was distant when we were children this scenario is also going to be our reality one day. We just don't feel the gravity of this.
Doing something does not feel as elating as day dreaming all day about doing it. We even give up doing what we love for this life of indolence, that's the worst part. Taking small steps and taking each day at a time makes a big difference. As James clear puts it " I accumulated small but consistent habits that ultimately led to results that were unimaginable when I started" in his atomic habits. Let's start making teeny tiny efforts to bring our passions to life before it's too late!
